PBA in Pay Raise Bid -Nassau Patrolmen's Benevolent Association officials contended in court papers filed Friday that because of the county government's improved financial outlook the courts should order a pay raise for the police. Earlier this week, county officials reported that after running up a record $18 million deficit last year, they hope to break even this year or at least limit the county's deficit to a few million dollars. County Executive Ralph Caso has been challenging an arbitration award of 12.3 per cent in raises and fringe benefits for the 1975 police contract. Caso's position is that the county cannot afford the raise. PBA lawyers filed an affidavit Friday before the State Court of Appeals, citing a Newsday story on the county's improved finances and said "the major thrust of the attack on the arbitration award that the county is in no financial position to pay it, no longer exists as a viable argument."
