OBITUARY GEORGE TOBIAS Hollywood (UPI) -Character actor George Tobias, 78, a veteran who specialized roles and played the part of neighbor Abner Kravitz in the "Bewitched" television series, died of cancer Wednesday after a long illness. It was also disclosed yesterday that a car carrying his body from Cedars Sinai Medical Center to a mortuary late Wednesday night was stolen for a brief time before the thieves apparently realized in best friend George Tobias in 1942 their mistake. Police said the incident occurred after a minor traffic accident in Hollywood. Tobias, born in New York and active on the stage and in movies and television, included in his film credits "Sergeant York," "Yankee Doodle Dandy" and "The Seven Little Foys." Funeral services will be held today at Mt. Sinai Memorial Park in Los Angeles.

By HUGH WYATT tance between Ithaca (site of Cornell's Eight prominent business and philanthropic figures based in the metropolitan area have accepted appointment as public members of a newly formed board of overseers of Cornell University Medical College and Graduate School of Medicine, it was announced yesterday. Frank H.T. Rhodes, president of Cornell University in upstate Ithaca, said that the board "will have broad authority to exercise general supervision over the medical college and the graduate school." "The eight members will be part of the 11-member board appointed by the Cornell trustees," he said.

"They will review and recommend faculty and senior administrative staff appointments and affiliation agreements with other institutions." Officials said that the action, unprecedented at Cornell, was intended to provide more local control and community involvement for a great New York City institution. The medical center, they explained, had become too large and complex to continue to be run entirely by trustees operating out of Ithaca. Rhodes said Cornell is fortunate to have "such distinguished persons taking an active part in its medical of them have contributed extensive service to educational, community, cultural and civic organizations and institutions, and their participation will surely enhance the future of Cornell One aim of the new board is to bring the expertise of the corporate world to the institution, which, like most hospitals and medical schools, has felt the financial crunch. Lynch, a native of Brooklyn, retired to Long Beach, L.I., in 1970. He died Wednesday at Long Beach Hospital.

Adams, 81, spiritual leader of about 20 million Christians as president of the Baptist World Alliance from 1955 to 1960, will be buried today. He suffered a massive stroke Sunday and died Wednesday. JOHN A. ROONEY John A. Rooney, a retired federal mediator who specialized in Teamsters negotiations in the New York area, died yesterday in a hospital in Boynton Beach, where he had been undergoing treatment for pneumonia.

He was 75. He was born in Brooklyn and joined the federal Mediation and Conciliation Service in 1942. FRED BERK A memorial service for Fred Berk, 69, an authority on Israeli folk dance and founder and director for 28 years of the Jewish dance division of the 92d St. YMHA, will he held on April 6 at the Lexington Ave. and 92d St.

Berk was the director also of the Hebraica Dancers, the Israeli Folk Dance Festival and the Israeli Folk Dance Institute of the American Zionist Youth Foundation. Berk, who was born in Vienna, studied at the State Academy of Dance there and came to this country in 1941. He danced professionally for 10 years before turning to teaching.
