Corpus man in historic lawsuit dies Associated Press CORPUS CHRISTI Jose Cisneros, the lead plaintiff in a historic lawsuit about segregation within the Corpus Christi school district, has died of colon cancer. He was 65.

Cisneros, who died Sunday at his home in Corpus Christi, was the lead plaintiff in a 1968 lawsuit charging the Corpus Christi Independent School District with operating segregated schools. The case was one of the first in which Mexican Americans were identified as members of a distinct ethnic minority. Because his name led the list of plaintiffs from the United Steelworkers union, Cisneros and his family became targets of vandalism and threats of violence. U.S. District Judge Woodrow Seals ruled in favor of the plaintiffs in 1970, and a year later he ordered the district to draw up: a desegregation plan.

The school district still must provide information showing it is complying with court orders, said district spokesman Scott Elliff. Cisneros, an Air Force veteran who worked as an electrician and mechanic, is survived by his wife, Josephine; four daughters, Christine Colunga, Carmen Yanez, Carole Barnes and Catherine Gutierrez, all of Corpus Christi; and a son, Richard Cisneros of Corpus Christi.
